My main goal is to eventually get a CFI certificate, I have my private pilot's license but I'm wondering if I should work on my instrument rating, or commercial rating next? |
|
Instrument will give you better skills, and without it you won't get too much Commercial work I would have thought, so go the Instrument rating first, unless you have some commercial non IFR work lined up. |

As 61.129 (3) (i) requires 10 hrs of instrument training for a commercial certificate, you might as well go ahead and get the instrument first. Also, from a financial point of view - you get a bigger break on insurance with an instrument rating than you do with a commercial certificate. PS - It's a commercial certificate, not a rating. Just as you add an instrument rating to a private certificate, you can add an instrument rating to a commercial certificate. You don't add a commercial rating to a private certificate. It's a common mistake of terminology. |

I'd start with an instrument rating first. You can get a commercial rating as a private pilot, but you'll be restricted in regards to the type of flying for hire you can do. The instrument rating you'll need eventually, and it gives you the freedom to fly in a wider variety of conditions. Plus your skills as a pilot will increase significantly! |
