What are outflows and what weather phenomenon are they associated with? What are the dangers present to aircraft when outflows are nearby? |
|
Outflow refers to an outflow of air ahead of a thunderstorm. As the rain/hail descends, it pushes air with it, which hits the ground and moves outward. If I'm not mistaken, outflow is the most common cause of a gust front immediately before a thunderstorm. Presents obvious dangers to aircraft in the form of wind shear, as well as downdrafts that can easily exceed climb capability and turbulence. |
