What are the advantages of a high wing aircraft versus a low wing aircraft and vice versa? Is there a preference you have for one or the other?

Heh, I expected this question to come up sooner or later. :) Since I've mostly done low-wing flying here are some of the pros and cons I've noticed

Pros

  • Easy access to the fuel tanks
  • The wing is a nice step to enter the aircraft and put your flight bag on
  • In the winter the sun keeps the cabin toasty
  • Nice visibility of the sky
  • It looks cooler ;)

Cons

  • Low wings are useless for camping
  • You can't really see the ground beneath the wing
  • You bake in the summer
  • Crawling under the wing to check the fuel sumps is a PITA

I prefer high wing aircraft. The reason being is I feel it is more stable about the longitudinal axis. How's that for an aerodynamic term. :-) A high wing aircraft has more clearance for heavy crosswind approaches and the best part is that I can see the ground below as I am trying to locate my visual checkpoints on my flight plan.

Other high wing cons: 1. Higher CG so in event of a ground loop or loss of directional control, the effects will be more severe. 2. Harder to see approaching traffic when holding short for take off. 3. Wing dips into the lateral view when in the traffic pattern. For less experienced pilots this can make it harder to get runway alignment.

I have both a C182 and a Piper Cherokee so I fly both. I find it easier to touchdown softly in the Piper. I think its because there is more ground effect from the wing being closer to the ground but it could just be my imagination.

The ground effect thing is not your imagination! I fly low-wing airplanes normally, but recently I checked out in a Cessna and that was the biggest difference I noticed. I usually grease my landings in the Cherokee, but I bounced that 172 off the runway like it was a tennis ball! It was quite an embarrassing end to an otherwise flawless checkout.
