Mahlon Sweet Field (KEUG) at Eugene, Oregon (on the northwest portion of the Klamath Falls sectional) has terminal radar services (Cascade approach/departure control). What I'm curious about, is why there's no gray-line circle depicted on the sectional indicating a TRSA? If a TRSA is defined as airspace where terminal radar services are provided (typically around a Class D airport, like KEUG), then how does this not meet the definition of a TRSA? Is it because Cascade is not in operation 24 hours a day (even though Seattle Center covers the radar services for KEUG when Cascade is closed)?

Most pilots unfamiliar with the area don't know they need to contact Cascade approach before they talk to Eugene tower on the way in to KEUG, and I'm thinking a TRSA circle on the sectional would clear up a lot of that confusion.

Anybody have any insight into this?

TRSA's are a hold over from the old National Airspace System (NAS). I don't think they are able to classify airspace as TRSA anymore.

From my understanding, TRSA's are still in the NAS because when they were reclassifying the nation they could not figure out what to do with that airspace. As a result, they decided to keep the TRSA area as it is and classify the primary airport as Class D.

It is important to note that the surrounding area may either be Class G or more likely Class E airspace.

Thanks Wesley. I was hoping it wouldn't be an it's-just-an-old-leftover-thing answer, but I guess that's what it is.

Seems like Sectionals should show that a Class D airport has terminal radar services, and I'm irritated that they don't. ;)
