My flying club is holding a ground class for the private pilot test, I'm debating whether or not I should attend (I'm working on my private). It's pricey compared to the home studying I'm doing now, are there any advantages to attending the class versus studying on my own? I'm pretty confident about how I'm doing on my own, but at the same time I'm worried that I might be missing out on something. |

Hi FlyGuy, Either the home study program or ground school classes will do to pass the written test. Undoubtedly, there are questions that the home study program will not fully answer and you will need a knowledgeable person to answer. This forum is a good place to ask your questions. I would go more for the networking with other pilots who are learning the material and you can get to know the instructors that you will be flying with. It's possible to meet another ground school student who has some interesting comments on a certain instructor. Just my thoughts. |

Hi FlyGuy, I home studied for both my private and instrument rating. It was a great way to save money and for me, I think I learn faster and better hitting the books on my. That said, I feel like in studying at home I missed out a little on the social / community aspect of flying and getting to know other pilots at the flying club/FBO. After you get your license, if you're just flying as a hobby or for recreation, it can become difficult to keep up with flying on a regular basis. Becoming friends with others who share the passion for flight can really help keep you involved and active in flying long after you get your ticket. As wbeard said, participating in online forums can also help as well, especially if you have an off-the-wall question that you might be embarrassed to ask your CFI or the folks around the airport. |
