The CFI practical test is by far the hardest test the FAA has in its arsenal. Even the ATP practical test didn't compare to what I had to know for the CFI test. With that said, I think it is one of the most rewarding experiences I have had so far. Well worth the effort I put into it.
The most difficult thing for me was realizing that not all students learn the exact same way. Sounds funny now but the instructor needs to tailor the lesson to the student and not the other way around.
This is my advice for you. Open up the front of the CFI PTS book and read up to where the area of operations start. Basically, the front part of the PTS book. Learn what is satisfactory and unsatisfactory performance is. Next, obtain a copy of every reference mentioned on those pages. It is a big list and read every single one of those references. This is the material that the examiner is going to quiz you on. The second thing is to create a lesson plan for each private and commercial maneuver. Lastly, teach your ground school and flight maneuvers lessons to a friend who is not in aviation to see how much they understood from what you taught them.
If you would like someone to proof your lesson plans I'd be glad to help
